A New system of Voting In US elections
After Hillary Rodham Clinon's didn't win the electoral vote and won the popular vote by almost 3 million votes, many have questioned the validity of the electoral college. But there are other things that shoud change. The whole primary voting system should be scrapped. In the US presidential elections candidates are chosen by primaries first and then those who win the primaries get to be nominated by the party. And these nominees contest the elections ,and the person who wins the electoral college votes wins the election. The primaries elect a person who is likely to mobilise people, win an election rather than who will make a great president.Although both qualities can be present in a person many are good in only one thing.Hillary Clinton,Albert Gore can make great presidents, they are not good in mobilising people to vote for them as per the electoral college,Although Hillary won the popular vote by 3 million, she lost the electoral vote which is a outdated, old system of the mid 19th century.
Hillary Clinton contested the primaries in 2008,but barack obama won the nomination. He was an average president who was unpopular in the last two years, which led many whites to vote for the republican party.Hillary won the nomination in 2016,but lost the electoral vote.
So we should do away with primaries who vote for someone who could win an election rather than who will be a good president.
Each state should be divided into areas equal to the number of electors. And there should be an election to every area. All political parties should have 570 electors in the 50 states, according to the state numbers. The parties should come out with their policies and campaign.Like in first past the post, whichever party gets the maximum number of electors nationwide should be declared winner of the election. The wining party electors should then elect the president. This way electors will elect who is best suited to become president, rather who can win an election.
For example if Democrats win 300 electors, and republicans win 250 and liberterians win 20 electors, the 300 electors of the democratic party will choose the president.
